Plein-Air Watercolor
Canyon Road Gallery, Santa Fe, NM 7x11
En plein air is a French term that refers to the act of painting outdoors. Plein air conceptually began for me at the age of 5. I grew up on the Westside of Chicago in a two-story grey stone apartment with two working parents, my wonderful grandmother, and my older brother with whom I shared a bedroom. I was left with only an unenclosed back porch for my art projects. I set aside a 5x6 foot area and used wooden orange crates as furniture (these crates where also used for street travel with the addition of a 2x4 and old roller-skates). This was my first studio.
The view from the studio was to the west and looked on a foreground of crumbling red brick (the garage) and a background of billowing cloud layers and a setting sun. I saw the clouds as western snow-capped mountains towering over vast prairies. I dreamed of taking the 12th Street streetcar west to the end of the line, buying a horse, and riding the plains where the buffalo roam.
Two decades later, in 1958, Route 66 became that streetcar to the west when I drove from Chicago to Los Angeles. Now another five decades, 9,000 drawings, and 1,000 paintings find me looking out my Santa Fe studio window at the snow-capped Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The last fading yellow Aspen leaves have blanketed the earth before the pinon and juniper trees and the billowing western clouds continue to inspire me as I paint my view of the west.
Welcome to the west and travels with Charlie.
